The SBYF Project is a grassroots community art project, whose mission is to share wisdom between strangers & generations, and to support families struggling with Alzheimer’s Disease & related dementias.

In July of 2009, Matthew Ross Smith set out across America with the goal of meeting 3,000 strangers, and handing each of them a postcard. On one side of the cards he’d printed a question: “If your time was short and you could tell your child or grandchild just one thing, one piece of advice, what would it be?” Instead of signing their names, he instructed the strangers to trace their handprints onto the cards—a unique “handprint signature”—so that someday a future reader might find the postcard, match the handprint...and know that was the advice they were meant to find.

Learn the Secret of the Spaces

The secret of the spaces between your fingers is the original piece of wisdom that inspired the SBYF Project.

For the next couple of weeks we'll be sharing the secret with everybody, during a special preview period. After that, you'll need the special code to unlock the secret
of the spaces!

The Wisdom of Strangers

The Wisdom of StrangersFor the first time ever, Spaces Between Your Fingers postcards will be exhibited for the public. The "Wisdom Wall" will feature original "handfuls of wisdom" from 46 different states, from all different worldviews and backgrounds, from ages ranging 3 to 113. The exhibit is open to the public; we invite you to come to Melanie's Place at 53 N. 2nd Street, from June 9th to July 9th, and search for the handprint that matches your own. To celebrate the opening, Matthew Ross Smith will be performing with his band on Saturday, June 9 at 8 PM.
